Christmas is an exciting time to add a festive twist to the menu without complicating your routine or interrupting those busy Friday teatime rushes. Richard Turner, KFE Area Sales Manager for the East of England, shares five easy, budget-friendly ideas to add Christmas cheer to your menu
1. Festive fishcake baubles
If you already make your own fishcakes, transforming them into a festive treat is simple! Instead of shaping them as patties, roll them into round bauble-like balls. Coat them in breadcrumbs or batter, fry as usual, and for a touch of holiday magic, add a sprinkle of edible glitter. Richard suggests pairing cod fishcakes with a cranberry dip, which adds a seasonal flavour twist and looks great on social media too!
2. Battered Brussels sprouts with cranberry dip
Battered Brussels sprouts are a Christmas hit and must be tried to be believed! “Once fried, they go really sweet,” Richard explains. To make, just mix a thick batter (similar to what you’d use for sausages) and fry the sprouts in your snack pan for about six minutes. Serve them hot with a cranberry dip, and your customers might find themselves rethinking their holiday veggie lineup!
3. Warm up with alcohol-free mulled wine
Mulled wine is a festive favourite, and the alcohol-free version is an easy way to add Christmas warmth without an alcohol license. It doesn’t take up a pan – simply heat it in your bain-marie – and either sell it as a seasonal drink or give it out for free to customers waiting in line. “Customers will really appreciate it, and it gets people talking,” Richard adds.
4. Parsnip chips with honey drizzle
For a simple festive side, try parsnip chips. Just cut a few parsnips, toss them into the chip basket, and fry for a few minutes. When they’re golden, drizzle with honey for a delicious sweet-and-savoury add-on option. You could promote these as a great snack option while customers wait for their fish and chips, or pop a few on the counter for customers to sample first.
5. Turkey wraps, burgers and more
Nothing says Christmas like turkey! Richard suggests using turkey breast, butterflying it, breading it, and frying it. With this, you can create a range of festive menu items, like turkey wraps, burgers, and even turkey strips over loaded fries. It’s an easy and versatile option that brings a holiday favourite to the chippy.
A few seasonal twists like these can make all the difference, boosting customer interest and encouraging repeat business throughout the year.
