We are delighted to hear that National Fish & Chip Day 2024 will coincide with the 80th anniversary of D-Day next year and take place on Thursday 6th June.
Fish and chips and the Normandy Landings are intrinsically linked, with British soldiers identifying each other by crying out ‘fish’ and waiting for the response of ‘chips’ – so it is fitting that once again they are brought back together to mark this momentous occasion.
What’s more, during the First and Second World Wars fish and chip shops kept the fryers on and the nation fed following a decision by the government not to ration fish or potatoes for reasons of morale. With that in mind, nothing embodies the spirit of our great nation better than fish and chips.
While major events will be taking place across the UK on the 80th anniversary to remember those who gave their lives for the liberation of Europe during the Second World War, many local events will also be held to ensure the whole country can pay respect to the fallen of D-Day.
Paul Williams, managing director at KFE, comments: “We fully support NEODA’s decision to move National Fish & Chip Day next year to fall in line with the 80th anniversary of D-Day. We can’t think of a more fitting tribute to the brave soldiers who gave their lives for our freedoms.
“We too will be showing our support – plans for which will be unveiled in the new year – and we hope chip shops across the UK will join us.”
National Fish and Chip Day is championed and run by trade organisation The National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association, who founded the day in 2015. Since its inception, more than half the population have seen, heard or read about National Fish & Chip Day.
Gary Lewis, President of NEODA, comments: “National Fish and Chip Day has always brought the nation together to celebrate this iconic dish, and because of the intrinsic links it has always had with the world wars and D-Day we knew we wanted to be as involved as possible so have moved the date to show our support.”
